Once upon a time – many years ago – I was walking alone down dark Firefly Lane. It was the worst night of my life, and I found a kindred spirit. That was the beginning of our friendship. More than thirty years have passed. Tully and Kate. You and I against the world. Best friends forever. But stories end, don't they? You lose the people you love and you have to find a way to go on with your life…

Tully Hart is a woman with a vibrant personality, who lives her life dreaming big and is tormented by the memories of a painful past. She thinks she can overcome anything, until her best friend, Kate Ryan, dies. Tully tries to keep the promise she made to Kate to stand by her children, but Tully is completely ignorant of what family, motherhood, and caring for others mean.

Dorothy Hart lies at the core of Tully's tragic past. She had abandoned her daughter Tully many times when she was little, but now she returns, wanting to be by her side at a time when Tully is all alone. A single, tragic choice and a midnight phone call will bring these women together to embark on a painful, powerful journey of redemption.

An emotionally complex, heartbreaking novel about love, motherhood, loss, and new beginnings that reminds us that where there is life, hope, and love, there is also forgiveness. Told with Kristin Hannah's characteristically powerful narrative and captivating pen, the book proves why the author is one of the most beloved of our time.

What they wrote about the 1st part of the duology, titled Firefly Lane:

"Kristin Hannah's Firefly Lane tells the story of two best friends. On a second level, however, it speaks of the power of friendship and devotion, of life's adversities, of our choices, of jealousy, anger, the power of forgiveness. Of motherhood. Of what happiness truly is. While also raising the very important and always relevant issue of breast cancer. A poignant coming-of-age novel, dedicated to girls, to best friends, who become women – happy and fulfilled."

"In a scene at the beginning of the book, Tully and Kate sneak out of their homes for a late-night bike ride. As they race through the darkness, intrepid Tully urges shy Kate to let go of the handlebars. They both spread their arms out to the sides and embrace the starry sky, the stillness of the night, their adolescence. Kate is happy. And though their ride ends in a bad fall, Kate doesn't regret it for a moment. I think this scene encapsulates the entire book."
