One of the most important novels in world literature in a new translation.
Cuernavaca, Mexico, Day of the Dead. Geoffrey Firmin, former consul, former husband, alcoholic and now ruined, spends his last day sinking deeper and deeper into mezcal.
As the day drags on, it becomes clear that he must die – it is the only escape from a world that does not understand him.
His story, the image of the painful ascent to Golgotha, became a prophetic book for an entire generation.
Out of my material I wanted to create a jam session, a poem, a song, a tragedy, a comedy, a farce. It is superficial, profound, entertaining, boring, depending on one's taste. It is a prophecy, a political warning, a cipher, a mad film, an absurdity, a writing on the wall. It may be considered a kind of machine - and this machine works, I assure you, for I discovered it at great personal cost. And, in case you think I have created anything other than a novel, I will tell you that, in the final analysis, it is the real novel I intended to write, and indeed a damned serious novel.
