Siddhartha, the young son of a wealthy Brahmin, abandons the privileges and comforts of his father's home to seek enlightenment by any means. An "Indian fairytale," as Hesse himself called it, in which he synthesizes elements from Eastern religions, Jungian archetypes, and Western individualism to create a unique vision for humanity's journey toward spiritual fulfillment. Hesse's classic novel, by the Nobel laureate, was beloved worldwide, inspired generations of readers, writers, and thinkers, and was "rediscovered" by the rebellious youth of the 1960s, who saw in Siddhartha the ultimate symbol of their own spiritual awakening.
"I have tried to establish what all creeds and all human forms of piety have in common, what lies beyond national differences, what all races and all individuals believe and honor." Hermann Hesse
