Near the newly built residential complex with the flashy name "Progress Hill," hidden among the houses of a more humble neighborhood, there is a small playground. There, a battered toy, a hippopotamus known as Kabahiko, warms the hearts of the neighborhood's residents with its presence. Local legend has it that if you touch the part of its body that corresponds to your own ailing part, you will be healed.
Five very different people – a once-excellent student, a young mother without friends, a wedding planner on sick leave, a young man faking an injury, and a magazine editor-in-chief with impaired vision – will confess their problems to Kabahiko, seeking in its serene countenance the strength to face their personal challenges.
"The Healing Hippo of Hinode Park" is a tender book about hope and friendship. Through the everyday stories of five unforgettable characters, Aoyama traces an often unexpected path to
healing our wounds, through connection with our inner
world and those around us.
