Thomas Mann on vacation

Tegernsee, summer of 1918. Thomas Mann and his family are spending their holidays at the lake. The children swim and fish for roach, Thomas Mann rows, goes for walks and climbs a mountain for the first time, his wife takes care of their newborn baby, while Bauschan, the dog, dozes in the shade as the writer transforms him into a literary character. Everything seems idyllic, but Thomas Mann is plagued by worries. Germany's defeat in World War I is imminent, and it is now clear that the writer, with his Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man – which also led to a conflict with his brother – is on the wrong side. At the end of the summer, with the old world around him collapsing, Mann will have learned much about dogs and rowing, will have discovered the ecstasy of paternal love, and will be on the path that will lead him to his masterpiece, The Magic Mountain.
