April, an intelligent and solitary woman, has grown bored with her job: she leaves a letter inside a book for Westley, the employee at her neighborhood bookstore, who has a sweet smile and looks great in flannel shirts. Laura, a busy mother who has given up on love, buys the book, finds the letter, and believes Westley left it for her. A handsome man who loves books is exactly what she was looking for. Meanwhile, Westley is too engrossed in the filming of a movie at the bookstore to notice either of them. As April and Laura's anonymous correspondence continues, their mundane daily lives are called into question, allowing a glimmer of hope to appear. Is a happy ending near?
